This was a three-part outing to Southern Indiana, upstream along the Ohio River about an hour from Louisville. First we stopped in at Hanover College, then had lunch with an old friend and finished with a tour of the historic rivertown, Madison, Indiana.

We walked around the Hanover campus and followed a trail down the bluff to Happy Valley Creek, then downstream along the Ohio to Hanover Beach and back, about 4 miles.

We treated our friend Carl Hungness to lunch and he gave us a tour of his shop with an overview of recent projects: improvements to his 1954 Vincent Shadow, the fastest motorcycle in its day; his restoration of the 1930s LaSalle; a discussion of a possible buyer for a violin he made (he plays second violin in the Hanover Symphony); thoughts about a new bronze statue; and, he gave us copies of his biography of Carl Fisher, co-founder of the Indy 500, Miami Beach, Montauk and the Dixie and Lincoln Highways.

After lunch we went into downtown Madison walking past shops east to west on Main St, stopping at Hinkles for their famous hamburger, the Attic Coffee Shop, north on Mill St. to the riverfront, Lanier Mansion and back east past historic homes on Second St.
